For a variety of reasons, France is the preferred destination of many UK ski buffs whether they need gentle slopes and careful guidance or prefer to challenge the most forbidding heights of rigid glaciers. France is relatively close and easily accessible, it has extensive mountain ranges including the Alps, and the French have embraced the ski resort as an ideal tourist attraction and made it more and more attractive as visitors and revenues increase.

With all that said, and the endless options available, one area that stands out as a perfect destination is Paradiski in the Alps of Southeast France. Located in the Tarentaise Valley, Paradiski encompasses the largest area of linked ski resorts in the world, including Les Arcs, La Plagne and Peisey-Vallandry. The unique and quite breathtaking Vanoise Express cable car/ski lift that was opened in 2004 is the crucial link that really defines the region.

The Paradiski area in total offers about 425 kilometres of ski slopes, from the highest point at around 3250 metres to the lower regions where any novice can negotiate on skis or snowboard. There are countless ski-in ski-out opportunities throughout the area, and accommodations range from very good to fabulous.

Les Arcs encompasses four of the high-altitude resorts, with 171 lifts accessing more than 240 runs that include beginner slopes and runs for the very advanced skier only, with around 200 in the intermediate range. There is even an Olympic speed-skiing course, and top notch instruction is available for novice through expert skiers.

The La Plagne area of Paradiski offers six high-altitude resorts and ten resort villages, each with its own unique character and charms ranging from the traditional to the ultra-modern. Throughout the area, 244 varying runs are accessed by 139 lifts, with all levels of expertise accommodated, and La Plagne also boasts an Olympic class toboggan run and a dedicated snowboard park at Plagne Soleil, plus lots of other off-piste areas for boarders.

The central Peisey-Vallandry area is the geographical hub of Paradiski and basically links the other two regions. With the entire area so well served via lifts, skiing is non-stop and the terrain is varied enough for the most adventurous. Just a ride on the Vanoise Express is a thrill in itself, as the two independent cable cars travel at speeds up to 45km/hour over a stretch of more than 1,800 metres, with not a single supporting pylon.

Any area within the Paradiski region offers enough excitement and variety to satisfy the most avid skier, but there’s also plenty of opportunity for après-ski refreshment and recuperation from the rigors of snowy slopes. The area is not known for overly raucous nightlife, but there are some delightful pubs and restaurants to be found, and the neighbouring areas of Espace Killy and Les Trois Vallees are within easy reach if you really want to party all night.

For those across the United Kingdom and Europe skiing holidays in France are incredibly popular. The reason is due to the varied skiing options in the regions in France and the ease of access to get to the options. Plus the country has completely embraced skiing as a tourism market and ensured that a skiing holiday wherever it is in France will be extremely enjoyable.

For the avid ski lover one of the best places in France with the greatest to offer is Paradiski ski area. The area has an array of beginner’s runs, intermediate and of course expert level for those that have expertise in the sport. Located in the Tarentaise Valley the region is a link between La Plagne, Peisey-Vallandry and Les Arcs. The valley itself is in the region of Savoy in southeastern France’s heart of the Alps.

La Plagne, Les Arcs and Peisey-Vallandry all offer a myriad of choices for any type of skiing holiday in France. Les Arcs gives access to four of the high altitude resorts with over 20 runs for beginners, over 190 for the intermediate and close to 30 for experts. They are accessed by over 170 chair lifts. Peisey – Vallandry is included in those available runs and acts as a center hub for La Plagne and Les Arcs.

There are six high altitude resorts available in the La Plagne region with access to an additional four alpine villages in the area. One thing the locals boast about in the area is access to an Olympic bobsleigh run that is open to anyone with enough intestinal fortitude to get into the sleigh and head down the run. For ski holidays, there are over 244 runs with over 140 ski lifts. France continues to improve upon their already excellent infrastructure with so many offerings across the Alps.

With snowfall across the area, the slopes are much improved this week in France making the conditions seem rather good instead of spring like. There was more than 30cm that fell at the Espace Killy resorts in Val d’Isere and Tignes Wednesday March 30 and there are excellent conditions per the reports from Tignes. This turned out to be great news for the Ski Club Dual Slalon being raced in Tignes April 6.

There was also 25cm of snow on Chamonix and another 23cm that fell in nearby La Clusaz. Both currently have excellent conditions and other resorts received up to 10cm. The skiing is impressive and those enjoying the piste are saying that is nothing like spring skiing because the conditions are excellent.

In the Paradiski ski area of La Plagne and Argentiere had a light dusting of snow on Thursday including the parts of the Three Valleys resorts of Meribel and Val Thorens. Leader at Merible Jamie O’Hare said Thursday that the piste at Venturion which is at 2850m is in great condition thanks in part to the new snow.

Fine tuning your skiing skills in France

Regardless of whether you are an expert skier or a novice skier, France is the best place to head if you want to try out the skills you have.

One of the best places in France to fine tune your skills is in Chamrousse, which is found about 30km from Grenoble at the end of the Belledonne mountain range. One of the best parts about this resort, is that not only is it a great place to hone your skills, but there are often great cheap travel deals available for the resort as well.

For those who have an extensive amount of France skiing time under their belt, heading to the demanding runs are well worth your time, since some of the runs at Chamrousse have even been used for Winter Olympic events.

Those without a strong background can instead head to Chamrousse ski school where you can book a onetime lesson to brush up on your skiing or a few sessions in order to learn some new skills.

On the other hand, if you are a moderate skier, you may want to try out Nordic skiing lessons in order to learn how to get down some of the most difficult slopes of France in a new fashion without your boot attached to the ski.

Even more, if you want to learn how to do the tricks and flips that professional skiers perform, you can head to the Aero Style School where instructors can help you with freestyle skiing manoeuvres.

When it comes to skiing in France, it is hard to find a resort area better than the slopes and amenities found within the Savoie region. Already one of the most popular resorts found in Europe, the French Alps of the Savoie offer peaks that can present a challenge even to the most experienced skiers.

However, the Savoie Alps also offer a great place for those without extensive ski skills since there are so many slopes that there are suitable challenges for all ski levels.

For those who are planning a Savoie skiing adventure, the best place to start is Les 3 Vallees also known as the three valleys to English speakers. From this point you can get ski passes to eight of the best French ski resorts each of which has something new to offer you.

One of the resorts you should make a special effort to visit is Courchevel located in the Tarentaise Valley which offers a landscape covered with many bars, restaurants, and bars as well as five separate altitudes filled with entertainment for you to enjoy.

From the top of the region, you can see 600km of perfectly maintained pistes that are set against the stunning backdrop of the Mont Blanc and Les Ecrins massif.

While exploring in the Savoie region, you will also want to take a moment to try out the popular run of Combe Saulire which faces North and has some of the best snow cover in the area. The best time to hit this particular run however is in the morning because during the prime daytime skiing time it becomes quite busy.
