Spring is ideal for French ski trips

Many people head off to late season skiing due to the many holiday deals that pop up in March and April as well as the large snowfalls that continue to keep the pistes along the Alps fresh. Many people also make the mistakes of skipping the spring months of skiing assuming that the slopes will not be in proper condition, but the slopes are actually quiet and welcoming full of fresh powder that is arguably the best of the entire ski season.

With this in mind, there are several French resorts that are coated with fresh powder throughout the spring months and extremely welcoming breaks from the British rain. With Easter just a few weeks away there are still some family or group ski breaks and holidays still available. If you are thinking about booking one you should think carefully over which resorts can offer you the best skiing conditions which at this point will be those located at a high altitude so that the powder is still perfect and resorts that have a large variety of runs.

It may be tempting to head to other resorts given they have piste bashers and snow cannons to make their own snow but even these cannot keep the spring temperature from rising and melting the snow so it is best to choose resorts that measure over 1300m.

France has a few resorts that offer high pistes that make for great spring ski holiday locations such as La Plagne that offers slopes between 1800-2050m, Val d’Isere which sits at 1850m, and Alpe d’Huez which sits at 1860m. After a holiday at any of these you will get to come back fit and tan which is a nice combination for spring break.

Additionally, once you choose a resort you can choose the type of break that you would like to take by looking at ski hotels or ski chalets which are perfect for family use. Chalets that are catered are also a great choice for those that are taking a group holiday so that meals are not a worry and have plenty of communal spaces as well as private locations to make everyone happy.

Alpe d’Huez may be worth a look at

The fifth largest ski area in France is the Alpe d’Huez which includes altitudes that range from 2,230m to 3,330m and around 240km of pistes that are linked to each other.

It also has a modern lift system that contains one of the longest cable cars throughout the globe which helps shorten queue lines for the impatient skier.

As if this is not enough, transfer time to the famous resort is a little shy of two hours from Grenoble if you are able to travel the 21 hairpin bends that have made the Tour de France famous.

Although budget skiers enjoy the slopes of Alpe d’Huez, it does not have the same cachet that French resorts in the North have in common.

The basic problem with resort despite what it can offer skiers, is that while it is not ugly as such, it is not charming either with some apartments that still reek of blockade sixties architecture. Of course the skiing opportunities help offset this fact a bit, outside of the fact that it does not have a local airport nearby for quick flight accommodation.

All these facts put together explain why new chalets such as Le Village that are popping up nearby such as grand find. Built by a local architect in true Alpine style, Phillipe Siegel, the chalets come complete with a heated boot room, private hot tub, and only the best furnishings.

At only £819 a week, they are truly the saving grace that should make you take a second look at the Alpe d’Huez.
