Free Ski Carriage with British Airways from London City Airport

British Airways is offering winter sports fans the chance to fly their skis for free to the top three ski destinations from London City Airport for bookings made before October 31. Customers who book flights to Chambery, Geneva or Zurich will be able to take an extra piece of hold luggage on flights between December and March. This is in addition to the existing free one bag allowance and can be used for skis or other winter sports equipment.

British Airways currently operates seven flights a week from London City to Geneva and 22 flights a week to Zurich. From December 17 the four times a week winter only services to Chambery will begin.

All inclusive one-way fares to all three destinations are available to book on ba.com. All fares include free on-line check in and seat selection up to 24 hours before departure, no debit card charges and complimentary food and drinks on board the aircraft.

Luke Hayhoe, general manager commercial, BA CityFlyer, said: “We do already offer a generous 23 kilogram baggage allowance but wanted to give our skiing passengers an additional bonus this winter. Providing they book their flights in the October booking period they can take their skis for free until the end of March.”

British Airways London to Chambery

Shortly, British Airways will be flying out of London to Chambery, for anyone interested in skiing holidays in the French Alps.

The flights will begin on 13 December and continue up until March 2011. Flights will depart on Monday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with return flights leaving Chambery on Monday, Tuesday, Saturday, and Sunday.

British Airways says the scheduling allows travellers to be flexible with their holiday. This itinerary makes it easy for the British traveller, whether they care to stay on the slopes for a weekend, a week or still longer.

It only takes a couple of quick hours from London until you are on the best slopes in the world, staying at some of the most renowned resorts. In fact, you have more than 120 ski resorts to choose from in the French or Swiss Alps.

Flybe increases French ski flights

Flybe has a new winter schedule that offers a choice of up to fifteen different routes. Some of the new routes added include service to Charles de Gaulle in Paris, as well as Manston in Kent. The discount airline has fares that start as low as £24.99 for a one-way trip that includes charges and taxes.

Representatives say that Flybe has expanded their routes in direct correlation to their new arrangements with Air France, which makes them able to oblige expanded service requests. With this is mind; the winter schedule covers more ski and sun destinations.

Services have also been expanded to cover flight destinations in France from Edinburgh and also from Edinburgh to the southern region of England. The total winter schedule consists of more than 450 flights per week.

Snowjet ups number of ski flights

Snowjet has some really good news for weekend skiers this winter. Starting in February, there will be extra direct flights into Sion airport via Stansted, with a Friday flight leaving Stansted at 0900 and arriving in Sion at noon. There are no other direct flights to Sion at this time, so traffic at the airport will be light and travellers won’t have to spend much time getting from the plane to the slopes.

Snowjet’s Managing Director, David Lacy, said that the expanded flight schedule is expected to be a boon to skiers who can’t get away for more than a day or two, and the timetables are designed to allow maximum time on the slopes with as little delay as possible. Sion airport has a 30-minute check-in time, and the nearest resort is only about 20 minutes away by ground transport.

Sion, with its location in the Swiss Valais Region, is also the best route to many of Switzerland’s most popular resorts, like Zermatt, Crans Montana and Veysonnaz, amongst others. The Valais area is equally attractive to non-skiers, as it boasts plenty of spa hotels, world-renowned vineyards and superb winter weather.

Snowjet is the only operator with direct flights from the U.K. to Sion, and their website claims that they can save passengers up to two hours on transfers to ski resorts and other destinations in the area. They are currently advertising flights from London to Sion starting at £79 for a one-way ticket, and skiers can expect to see more specials during the season.

Airflights.co.uk offers cheap ski flights to France

Airflights.co.uk, the online flight company, has announced its new cheap flight deals for ski areas throughout Europe in particular ski resorts located in France.

The flight company advises consumers to book early because after the slower 2010 ski season they expect winter will be quite busy and the great snow cover over the Alps last year will encourage even more people to choose the Alps this winter. Flights to the area run as low as £106 for a flight to Chambery.

By arriving in Chambery, skiers can get to many of the great resorts of the France Alpine Savoie region. In fact, it is the easiest airport for reaching the famous ski resorts of Tignes, Les Arcs, Val d’Isere, La Plagne, Courchevel, Meribel, and Val Thorens.

Airflights is also once again offering cheap flights from England to Sion located in Switzerland. This airport is found in the Valais area of Switzerland allowing for plenty of access to ski resorts such as Verbier, Zermatt, Crans Montana, and Saas Fee.

In fact, Sion can allow you to save around two and a half hours on total travel time instead of transferring from a farther airport to the resort. Another advantage of travelling directly into Sion is that there is much less passengers which means that you can get through baggage claims much quicker than at other airports.

Of course this means that you have even more time to spend on the slopes which means that you may want to check out the Airflights deals this ski season.

BA London City to Chambery ski flights

Later in 2010 British Airways plans to extend its route out of London City to include flights to the southeast city of France, at Chambery.

BA CityFlyer will be operating the new service which will fly out four times a week from December 18^th thru the close of March 2011 for the ski season.

Those who jump onto flights to Chambery will be treated to a ride on the new BA fleet of Embraer 190 airplanes.

Commercial manager of BA CityFlyer, Luke Hayhoe, stated that their schedule is set up so that customers can spend anywhere from a full week to a long weekend to even longer on their next ski holiday.

Hayhoe added that the trip only takes a few hours and offers access to 120 ski resorts spread out across the Swiss and French Alps.

British Airways also announced that it will soon launch a direct route to the Scandinavian counties out of London City starting on September 12^th. Flights will arrive in Copenhagen.

Group wants an end to helicopter ski trips

The Lauterbrunnen Valley in Switzerland is designated as a USESCO World Heritage site with many a good reason. A high, secluded valley almost untouched by time and civilization, it is a dream come true for nature lovers and hikers. But it is also a favoured spot for avid skiers who wish to pursue their avocation during the summer months.

For many of these, the preferred means of transportation to the mountaintops is a helicopter.

On any sunny spring morning there may be dozens of skiers waiting for one of the flights to the heights, and helicopters take off every five minutes, with the noise reverberating off the sheer rock faces of the mountain.

Both residents in the valley and all the environmental groups in the country are now urging the government to restrict or ban the use of helicopters for “unnecessary” trips. Esther Hegglin of Mountain Wilderness, one of the environmental groups decrying the practice of heli-skiing, said that a ban on landing pads in protected wilderness areas would be at least a good first step in reducing the impact of traffic and noise on the peaceful silence of one of the last remaining ‘uncivilized’ spots on Earth. Of the 42 landing sites in Switzerland and France, about half are in protected areas.

There is much controversy regarding the issue, with helicopter companies insisting that heli-skiing is an important part of their business and good for the local economy, and various rescue operations and other interests stating that helicopters are a ‘fact of life’ in many remote areas.

They are useful for delivering food and building supplies (often for new ski resorts) and often essential for rescuing hikers and skiers. This is true, but the argument from protesters makes the point that helicopters are not the only way for skiers to reach their take-off altitude. The attitude is that if it’s worth doing it’s worth some effort, so why not walk?

It is so easy to reach the French ski resorts

For skiing, snowboarding and just about every other activity that involves playing in the snow, France has it all.

With two major mountain ranges, the Alps and the Pyrenees, the options are limitless and accommodations range from very basic to wildly elite, and include some of the most exciting and incredibly beautiful areas in the world.

The immense appeal of French resorts for winter sports derives not just from the breathtaking scenery, but from the facilities common to almost all of them, which include good cheap food and plenty of bars for socializing and taking the chill off.

The French also make it very easy to reach any of these inviting winter-oriented areas. If you don’t mind paying fairly steep tolls, most can be reached by road. If you are flying in, there are several airports with ground connections to everywhere.

Most resorts can be reached by train, which is an attractive option since the rail service is excellent – inexpensive and fast. During the winter there is train service direct from Waterloo Station in London to Bourg St. Maurice.

If you wish to work at a French resort through the winter months you won’t even need a visa as long as you’re an EU national, and there are a lot of jobs available among the hundreds of resorts. Bartending and table waiting are good possibilities, but don’t try holding an instructional class on the slopes if you don’t have a French instructor’s certificate.

Options for accommodation often include apartment blocks with few restrictions on party number. If you’re on a budget, stick with fast food and buy your alcohol in the supermarket.

Geneva – flights from £30

Close to the French border (the airport even has a French sector) Geneva airport is an ideal landing point for skiers and snowboarders, offering the choice of over 100 ski resorts within two hours’ drive. One of the closest is Lelex, a small resort served by 13 ski lifts, ideal for families and beginners. At the other end of the scale there’s Morzine, part of Les Portes Du Soleil, a huge interlinked ski area offering some 650 different pistes, served by over 200 ski lifts

Nice – flights from £43

Located for good access to the ski resorts of the southern French Alps and Italian Alps, there are 12 ski resorts within three hours’ drive. Isola 2000 is one of the best in range, rising to 2610m and offering about 50 pistes and around 120km of downhill skiing and snowboarding. Alba, about 2.5 hours from Nice, is an ideal choice for beginners; a compact area, it’s also good for cross country skiing, boasting 52km of Nordic trails.

Grenoble – flights from £24

There are over 50 ski resorts within 1.5 hours of the airport, including some of the biggest and best such as Alp d’Huez, Courchevel, La Grave, Meribel and Valmorel. For somewhere a little more secret, try Autrans, a quieter area with 16 lifts and about 18km of downhill slopes as well as 160km of cross country ski trails.

Toulouse – flights from £45

Toulouse airport offers access to Pyrenean ski resorts in France, Andorra and Spain. Pas de la Casa is a firm favourite with the Brits, renowned for its excellent value and lively après ski action, whilst the lesser known Andorran resort of Arcalis was recently named one of the most underrated ski resorts by The Times, due to its strong powder snow record and excellent off piste terrain.

Chambery – flights from £69

Deemed the ‘gateway to the French Alps’ Chambery is a top choice for skiers and snowboarders wanting quick access to the slopes. This small but modern ski airport is located just one hour away from several of France’s top ski resorts including La Tania, Courchevel, Méribel, Megeve and Valmorel.
