A charity that is focused on helping those with multiple sclerosis enjoy a better quality of life is on the lookout for snowboarders and skiers to sign up for their February France Monster Ski event.

The Monster Ski offers enthusiastic skiers the chance to ski over 90,000 vertical feet for three days and is organized to benefit the Multiple Sclerosis Trust aimed at skiers with an intermediate skiing level.

Participants in the event will be responsible for skiing the vertical side of Mount Everest for three days in a row at the Tignes resort from February 3^rd to 7^th of next year.

A spokesperson for the MS Trust stated that while the event may seem intimidating, those that are capable and confident on the slopes and are in good physical shape will find that they can meet the challenge.

The spokesperson added that the charity event is a great way to cover the expansive Espace Killy ski area while taking part in a charity event that will help change the way people live with a chronic condition that affects their quality of life.

Each participant in the Monster Ski event must pay £150 to register for the event and raise at least £1,700 in pledges in order to participate. The price tag may seem steep, but it does include transfers, flights, three day lift passes, accommodation, and ski guides.

Previous events held in Whistler, Colorado, and Engelberg have raised around £250,000 to support the MS Trust.

French and Austrian summer ski resorts disappearing

Ski resorts in Austria that used to be one of the prime locations for summer skiing are starting to slowly decay, with one of the largest resorts in Austria, the Zolden, announcing that this will be the last summer that it is open for summer glacier skiing.

Throughout the greater part of the nineties there were around 40 ski stations in Zolden, all of which served tourists in the summer. However, today there are less than half of these ski stations still open for summer skiing due to the decrease in viable glacial runs for alpine skiing during the summer, due to global warming.

French ski resorts are facing the same problem as the country, which was once predominantly known for offering alpine skiing year round, is announcing that many summer ski resorts will close their doors.

Among the top resorts that will no longer offer summer skiers refuge are La-Plagne, Val Thorens, and Alp d’Juez. Those planning to travel to another resort in France for summer skiing should be aware that many have changed their summer schedules.

Thus, the Tignes resort which normally stayed open from spring into summer will not only offer summer skiing in 2010 from the middle part of June through late August. Skiing will also be open for half the month during the months of May and September in Tignes.

France still in the running for winter Olympics

The IOC (International Olympic Committee) decided this past Tuesday to give Germany’s Munich and South Korea’s Pyeongchang the edge over France’s Annecy in the 2018 Winter Olympics race to host the Olympics.

All three were confirmed as candidates by the IOC executive board as contenders for the Olympics, but Annecy was asked to present a review of reports for sports venues in order to start the next stage of bids.

The IOC told reporters that the expert group decided there were no further questions for Munich or Pyeongchang, but Annecy was retained because a clearer picture of its sports sites needs to be looked at.

An IOC report stated that there are many challenges and a high degree of risk in the Annecy project which is why they will need to show their potential as a host of the 2008 Olympic Games.

January 11^th, 2011 is the last date to submit their final bids for their projects in front of an on-site visit and evaluation by the IOC commission which will meet back to report on June 6^th. A month after that the host will be chosen by all 115 IOC members.

The small French Alpine town has the smallest budget out of all cities making an attempt at the Olympic destination for the winter Olympics with a budget of only 21m dollars. In order to do so Annecy has linked together a range of winter sports facilities that is found across the region.

Pyeongchang is making its third bid for the Olympics even after losing its third attempt to host the Winter Olympics after losing to Sochi in Russia in 2014 and Vancouver in 2010.

New junior ski champ crowned in France

Niki Sole the Chipping Norton skier returned from the French ski resort of Meribel as the British junior champion and is now looking towards securing a spot on the senior squad of the next Winter Olympics that will take place in four years in Russia.

At 19, Sole who resides in the Over Norton village to the North of Chipping Norton won both the giant slalom and downhill races at the Meribel British Junior Championships.

Additionally, she placed second in the slalom and super giant slalom leading her to win the overall first place ranking in the Junior 2 category that is for skiers that are under the age of 21.

In addition to winning the junior title, she also has earned a ranking equivalent to winning third place in the senior level of championships.

Sole stated that she is over the moon about her final finish and that her work has paid off now after spending most of her winter and a great deal of her summer skiing.

Both her parents are Andorra ski instructors which mean that Sole has been skiing according to her pretty much ever since she could walk.

However, she said that her achievements could not have happened within the support of the West Oxfordshire District Council who has helped her with funding towards accommodation and travel.

Sole also has been backed by the Chipping Norton Nexus Community Gym who has offered her access to the centre at all times so that she can stay fit while off the slopes.

Winter X Games move to France

Fans of the Winter X Games, last held with such spectacular success in Aspen, Colorado will need to hone their French skills. Those fortunates who live in France may want to head towards Tignes as that is where the next Winter X Games will be held.

The Tignes Ski and Snowboard Resort was co-host to the 1992 Winter Olympics, so it has all the experience (and the terrain) needed to take on the fast-paced events scheduled for the 10^th through the 12^th of March this year. This is the first time the freestyle ski, snowboard and snowmobile exhibition has been to Europe, and the turnout is expected to be massive.

This snowsport event brings the top athletes in the field together in an all-out contest of skills that is unique and unparalleled in the world of winter sports. Eight events are on the schedule, including SuperPipe ski and snowboard, Slopestyle ski and snowboard, and

Snowmobile Best Trick.

Competitors on the roster are the top of the class worldwide in every category. Names that every fan will know, like Kevin Rolland, Mathieu Crepel, Simon Dumont and Gretchen Bleiler in the SuperPipe, Eric Willett and Eero Ettala in Slopestyle and Daniel Bodin the snowmobiler as well as dozens of others will be competing for fame and big prizes. New records are sure to be set.

The levels of both skill and enthusiasm are at such a peak that these Winter X Games are truly awesome to watch, whether from the sidelines (if you’re really lucky) or on one of the worldwide networks including ESPN.
