Conditions are great on the slopes with high altitudes causing heavy snow fall throughout the week.  In fact, June to September skiing is rapidly becoming popular on Europe’s glaciers and even more so with snowboarders that aim to hit the pistes fresh but when they are groomed.

Generally, the ski day starts around 8am and ends at lunchtime with skiers hitting the pool or bars for some rest and relaxation in the sunshine of the mountains.  Outside of the slopes, there is plenty to do on the alps during the summer for those who are not skiers with many resorts offering up to forty different activities that range from hiking to summer bob sleighing to kids’ clubs to white water rafting to mountain biking.

This makes the French Alps one of the best places for those that wish to enjoy the alpine self catering while taking the chance to experience the outdoors at a slower pace.

In particular, the Les Deux Alpes has some of the largest glaciers in Europe with a summer ski season that opened to a great start with everything but two lifts and two slopes open and all of the snow park features open for access.

The resort will remain open until August 28^th with lifts that run from 7:15am until 12:30 on a regular basis so that skiers can get the most out of the slopes each day of their visit.

La Plagne is easily one of the most travelled to ski resorts in Europe, along with the adjoined Les Arcs ski area.  Due to the fact that the region gets a large number of visitors on a daily basis, it is no surprise that there are also plenty of accommodations and hotels available to holiday goers.

However, there may be a bit more than are actually required around La Plagne because as a third generation ski resort it is a bit more like Ardous Huxley’s Brave New World when it comes to its architectural style, versus the typical rustic and traditional French designs of the other neighbouring ski resorts.

If you can look past this fault though, there is every type of downhill run, permutation, and runway to take on at La Plagne while skiing from huge glacier glides to downhill runs to small gentle cruises that lead skiers through tree lined avenues and charming villages.

La Plagne currently stretches across ten different ski villages with plans to extend over further than Peisy Vallandry and Montchavin.

Les Arcs has the same amount of excellent slopes to offer visitors with plenty of on and off-piste paths for the adventurous and those who prefer marked trails.  Those looking for a challenge often head down the Aigulle Rouge which is not only one of the most challenging areas to ski, but also the start of one of the largest French slopes.

At Chamonix around 90% of all the ski areas are at altitudes above 2000m, which allows most trails to stay open and skiable well into the late spring.  In fact, the trails of the Grands Montets which surround the Chamonix resort offer piste heights of 3300m, which is why annually Chamonix is the last ski resort to close with a final ski date of May 9^th.

Up in the mountains, every April shower brings fresh powder not rain, so before you put your skis away consider making it out for one last ski holiday.  In fact, spring is one of the best times to experience Chamonix due to its 20km Vallee Blanche piste and many backcountry trails that take adventurous skiers all around the valley area.

Those who do not have a lot of ski experience or families with small children also find that spring is the best time to hit the slopes because of milder conditions and a wider array of activities off piste.

For example, the Chamonix resort area boosts an ice rink, indoor swimming pool, indoor tennis courts, dog sleigh rides, an English cinema, and a bowling alley.  The mild conditions also make it the perfect time to explore the Chamonix resort by heading off on one of the many valley hiking trails or simply heading into the city to check out the active après ski activities.

The couple has been together for over seven years and head to the French resort last weekend and discovered why it is so popular among Russian business tycoons such as Roman Abramovich.

The couple apparently found the freedom of the slopes and the Alpine air to be inspiring given that they were openly affectionate atop a restaurant up in the mountains in public without a thought.

A diner at the restaurant stated that they were messing with each in a cute romantic way with Kate dressed in a white ski jacket and William in sunglasses.

The two are known for finding exotic locations to holiday at and over the last year have been spotted on holiday in the South of France and on the island of Mustique in the Caribbean.  Middleton was also seen in the West Indies last year with her family.

Outside of exotic holidays, the pair have also been off on many weekend holidays to the country and headed to Prince Charles Scottish retreat for their New Year.

Prince William and Kate met at St. Andrews University and have been surrounded by rumours that an engagement is yet to come but close friends state that they will not be wed until at least another year.

Most of the terrain of the Les 2 Alpes sits at about 1,650m in altitude with lifts that connect 3,600 mountain tops which means there are 220km terrain available for skiers to conquer.  Within this area is not only the largest glacier in Europe that can be skied, but also everything from powder fields to steep moguls.

Plus, you never have to worry about queues at the Les 2 Alpes given that the lift system is highly developed and on average transports 66,000 people up the hill covering a 2,300m vertical drop.  Also stunning during the trip is the panoramic scope of the French Alpes.

There are also plenty of slopes for skied skiers to test out such due to the natural gullies, cliff drops, off piste runs, and backcountry that is laid out around the area.  In particular, there is an off-piste trail that starts in near the resort and dumps out at the village of La Grave which is quite popular among strong skiers although you will need to a hike a bit to get to its start.

Those who are looking for a bit more thrill may want to try out the Glacier de Mantel and other black diamond trails scattered around the mountain.

For skiers, there is simply no place in the world that is better than France.  Of course the French will heartily agree with this conclusion, and to make it even more attractive, visitors find that on the slopes the notoriously aloof French people are as welcoming and fun-loving as anyone could wish.  In fact it would be hard to be anything but expansive in the wonderland of the mountains.

France takes its skiing opportunities quite seriously, though.  Long before the Olympic Games of 1992 brought French ski areas to the attention of the world, the country was establishing some of the first Alpine ski areas in resorts such as Chamonix and Megeve.

The vast areas of the French Alps and the Pyrenees offer unlimited options for exciting ski adventures in their beautiful wide open spaces.  There are plenty of no-frills establishments, but also a virtual smorgasbord of newer resorts built specifically with the skier in mind.  In spots such as Courcheval, Les Arcs and Tignes (to mention only two) whole villages have been built for the ultimate skiing experience.

In most of these purpose-built areas, accommodations include apartments and hotels right by the slopes.  You can put on your skis at the front door and whoosh away on the most beautiful and challenging slopes to be found anywhere.

To top it off, you can enjoy the best of the après-ski life with great food and drink in convivial surroundings.  Be sure to partake of some Fondue Savoyarde, along with its traditional consequences if you drop your bread in the cheese sauce.

Of course, maybe it was the death of her close friend Alexander McQueen that had her balking at the idea of a week in the Big Apple.

While supermodel peers Helena Christensen and Naomi Campbell were paying their tributes to McQueen, Moss took her daughter Lila Grace to France for a half term skiing break.  It was hard to pick her out from the chic ski set however, as she easily blended right in complete with matching gloves, hat, and a fur trimmed jacket.

After spending a few hours on the slopes, Moss met her boyfriend Hamie Hince and another friend and headed to an outdoor table for some après ski activities.  She seemed to enjoy herself while eating lunch and smoking before returning to the slopes.

It is good to see Moss lighten up a bit after last week’s discovery that McQueen had committed suicide inside of his London home.  Moss was said to be stunned by the news and issued a statement through her agent because she was too upset to speak on her own behalf.

The statement simply read that Kate is shocked to have heard of the death of her close friend and that she is keeping his family in her thoughts.
